What is Mahamudra and why do we need to practice it?

Mahamudra practice slows us down so we can see things as they really are. Mahamudra reveals the ultimate nature of the mind, intrinsically pure and empty of inherent nature: pure awareness, luminous and spacious - clarity and cognisance. (Excerpt from Gelug Mahamudra, Eloquent Speech of Manjushri by Zasep Tulku Rinpoche).

Discover a most insightful and pragmatic approach to meditation. Mahamudra is appropriate for all levels of practitioners. Anyone, from complete beginners to the most advanced meditators will benefit from these direct empirical instructions, cutting through conceptuality and diving directly into the depth of the mind itself. With Mahamudra meditation there is no doctrine or philosophy, Mahamudra can only be experienced.

In his Song of Mahamudra, the great Mahasiddha Tilopa states: “In the early stage of meditation, mind is like a fast moving stream, rushing through the gorges of the Himalaya with amazing sound and power; In the middle course, mind is like a gently flowing River Ganga; Then, at the end, mind is like the river merging with the great ocean.”

Who is Saraswati?

Saraswati (Sanskrit), also known as Yangchenma or Yangchen Drolma (Tibetan), is a well-known deity in both Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. She is considered the patroness of art, music, language, literature, poetry, philosophy, and all creative endeavors.

Saraswati is regarded as both an emanation of Tara and the consort of Buddha Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom. She also manifests in a wrathful form known as Vajravetali (Sanskrit) or Dorje Rolangma (Tibetan), who is the consort of Yamantaka, a wrathful form of Manjushri whose practice belongs to the Highest Yoga Tantra classification.

Saraswati was a yidam, or personal meditational deity, of the 14th-century Tibetan master Je Tsongkhapa, who founded the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. He composed a beautiful devotional poem titled ""Prayer to Saraswati,"" based on the pure visions he had of her. Saraswati is believed to have frequently appeared to Je Tsongkhapa during his many travels, offering counsel and inspiration throughout his years of study and contemplation."

Who is Tara?

Tara is the female Buddha of wisdom and compassion in action; her qualities are represented by her 21 manifestations. The practice of 21 Taras allows one to meditate on each of her qualities and thus produce a state of mind of the nature of these qualities, leading to liberation from all suffering.
